Mottainai For Swachh Bharat: A Creative Path To Environmental Learning

The “Mottainai for Swachh Bharat” initiative is an Indo-Japanese collaboration designed to promote environmental awareness and responsible living among school children in India. Inspired by the traditional Japanese philosophy of Mottainai, which emphasizes reducing waste and respecting resources, the project used storytelling and creative learning to educate children about hygiene, sustainability, and mindful consumption.

Implemented over three years, the initiative engaged students through Japanese picture books, interactive storytelling sessions, and creative activities that encouraged participation and behavioral change. The program aimed to instill environmental values at an early age while fostering cross-cultural learning between India and Japan.

Projects Overview

Collaborative Indo–Japanese Initiative:

The project was jointly implemented by Kodansha Ltd. and IJK Group in India, with funding support from Japan International Cooperation Agency and additional support from ITOCHU India Pvt. Ltd., Maruti Suzuki India Limited, and Govindalaya.

Storytelling-Based Environmental Education:

Designed for students aged 8–12 years, the program used Japanese children’s picture books and storytelling sessions to introduce the concept of Mottainai and promote awareness about sustainability, hygiene, and responsible resource use.

Three-Phase Learning Approach:

The storytelling initiative was conducted in three structured phases. Professional storytellers first introduced the concept, teachers then reinforced the learning through creative classroom activities, and finally students led storytelling sessions through role plays, quizzes, and group discussions.

Book Caravan for School Outreach:

A specially designed mobile book caravan travelled to participating schools, delivering storybooks and learning materials while creating excitement and visibility for the campaign.

Implementation Across Multiple States:

The project was implemented in more than 80 government schools across Delhi, Haryana, and Gujarat, reaching thousands of students through interactive learning sessions.
